Using MarkUp to Streamline Visual Feedback and Client Collaboration
Effective communication with markup
Effective communication with markup is the backbone of any successful creative project, especially when it comes to visualisation and design-based deliverables. At DoDA, we rely on collaborative tools like MarkUp to enhance how we interact with our clients, gather feedback, and implement changes. MarkUp is a simple but powerful platform that allows clients to directly engage with project content—bringing transparency, clarity, and momentum to every stage of development.
Welcome to Your Project Review Space on MarkUp
When you first access your dedicated MarkUp space, you’ll land on a page specifically set up for your project. This acts as your visual hub for reviewing content, whether it’s concept art, renders, layouts, or site visuals. Before you begin exploring, it’s helpful to walk through the interface to understand how everything works.
On the right-hand side, you’ll see a panel displaying your project images or files. This allows you to easily switch between pages and track progress from top to bottom. You can zoom in and out, snap the content to your screen, or download files directly for closer inspection.
Invite Your Team and Start Collaborating
If you need to bring someone else into the review process—such as a colleague or another stakeholder—you can simply click the share icon and send them the link to your MarkUp board. To maximise the collaborative benefits, we recommend adding your name when prompted. This allows us to see who is providing feedback, streamlining our response and ensuring accountability.
For website-based reviews, MarkUp offers a browse mode which lets you interact with the site as if you were viewing it live. Just remember to switch back to comment mode to leave feedback.
Leaving Comments and Tracking Progress
To leave a comment, click anywhere on the image or document. You’ll be able to type your feedback, draw directly on the visual, upload reference materials, include links, or even record a video comment for more detailed input. Once you post, your comment will appear down the left-hand side of the interface for easy tracking.
You can also access a tab that shows both active and resolved comments. This distinction helps you stay up to date on which notes have been addressed and which are still in progress—ideal for keeping projects moving forward efficiently.
Clarity Through Colour: The Comment Traffic Light System
One of the ways we reduce ambiguity is by using a traffic light system to tag comments and clarify next steps:
- 🟢 Green: Understood – We’ve got it, and we’re working on it.
- 🟡 Yellow: Needs clarification – Something’s missing, like a reference or specific instruction.
- 🔴 Red: Outside of scope – Either due to timing or because it’s beyond the agreed deliverables.
By tagging feedback with one of these icons, both clients and artists gain a clear, mutual understanding of where attention is needed and where decisions have already been made.

Finalising Feedback and What Happens Next
As you comment, our team of artists will begin marking items as “resolved” once they’ve been addressed. This happens in real-time, allowing you to see exactly what’s been completed.
When you’re done reviewing, simply click the “Let the team know you’re done” button. A quick email to confirm this also helps us prioritise your feedback and start making the necessary updates right away. Once all feedback has been actioned, a DoDA artist will reach out with an estimated delivery time for your next round of content.
